A behind-the-scenes look at the questions we ask, the red flags we watch for, and what truly matters to us when sourcing our crystals at the world's largest gem show.
This week, we’re in Tucson, right in the middle of our biggest crystal-sourcing trip of the year. Every January, we make our way to the desert for the Tucson Gem Show, and no matter how many times we’ve gone, it never loses its magic.
Thousands of vendors, ancient stones from all over the world, and long days spent carefully selecting crystals we’ll eventually bring home to share with our community.

It’s an incredible privilege to do this work... to source crystals in person, ask questions directly, build relationships with vendors, and choose pieces with care and intention. (All of that care starts long before we ever step onto the show floor. In case you missed it, check out our recent blog about our pre-Tucson prep, packing, and travel process!)
Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about how to shop the Tucson Gem Show wisely. If we could go back in time, we would have loved a guide like this when we first started attending...something to help avoid early mistakes, spot red flags, and shop with confidence.
So today, we’re sharing exactly that!
Timing Your Visit: When You Go Matters
One of the most important (and overlooked) aspects of the Tucson Gem Show is timing.
We've found that the second-to-last week in January is often too early unless you’re staying for multiple weeks. Many vendors aren’t fully set up yet, and while you might get first pick at a few booths, you won’t experience the show in its entirety. Plus, accommodation rates are high throughout the season, so timing strategically really matters.

Just before the last weekend in January is our preferred window.
At that point, most shows are open, and there’s significant overlap across venues. When people say “the Tucson Gem Show,” what they really mean is dozens of shows happening simultaneously across the city. This is when you can explore the widest range.
Some buyers prefer going toward the end of the show (early February) to hunt for last-minute deals. Vendors have invested heavily in shipping their material and may be more motivated to sell. This can be a great strategy if you’re okay with potentially reduced selection or slightly lower quality.
Our preference? Going earlier, paying fair prices, and having access to the best quality and widest selection.
In a show this competitive, pricing is usually reasonable no matter when you go...but quality goes fast!

Wholesale vs Open Shows: Know Before You Go
Early in the show season, some venues are strictly wholesale. These require a tax ID, reseller permit, or wholesale license to enter and purchase.
Other venues are much more relaxed and don’t require any credentials at all, even offering wholesale pricing to the public. This can be a great option if you’re a practitioner, collector, or small business owner just getting started.

The key is doing a bit of research ahead of time. A quick search will give you a list of shows, dates, locations, and requirements.
Knowing where you can and can’t go saves time and frustration.

Selecting Vendors: Relationships Matter
One of the biggest reasons we love shopping in Tucson is the opportunity to buy directly from the people sourcing the material.
Over the years, we’ve built strong relationships with many family-owned businesses, small distributors, and mining cooperatives. Supporting these vendors allows us to offer more unique material, and often means more of the money goes directly back to the people who mined the stones.

We always prioritize vendors who are transparent, knowledgeable, and willing to answer questions.
Trust is built over time, and these relationships are one of the most valuable parts of attending a show like Tucson.

Ethical Crystal Sourcing: Asking Better Questions
Ethical sourcing is incredibly important to us. But it’s also complex.
The term “ethical” is used widely in the crystal industry, often without much clarity. For us, we don’t use that label lightly.
When we describe a crystal as ethically sourced, it means that as many of the following criteria as possible have been met:
❌ No child labor was used
💰 Workers were paid fair wages
🌍 Mining and processing had low environmental impact
👷♀️ Proper safety equipment and conditions were used
✨ Bonus: The sale benefits the local community (clean water, education, food access)

We can’t always know every detail of a crystal’s journey. But whenever ethically sourced material is available, we choose it. Asking thoughtful questions and demanding accountability helps push the entire industry toward better practices.
Spotting Crystal Fakes & Enhancements
Fake, mislabeled, or enhanced crystals are everywhere, and Tucson is no exception.
Some fakes are obvious (like resin “Malachite”), while others are more subtle. Natural Malachite is heavy and copper-based, with soft, flowing banding. Resin versions are lightweight with chunky, uniform stripes.
Mislabeling is also common. Sometimes intentional, sometimes accidental. Stones may be sold under trendier names, or mistaken for more valuable material.

Enhancements to watch for include:
Dyeing (common in Quartz and Agate)
🔥 Heat treatment (often Amethyst sold as Citrine)
⚠️ Artificial irradiation (seen in Smoky Quartz, Kunzite, Hiddenite)
There’s no single test that works for every stone, and many “at-home tests” can be misleading (or even dangerous). Education is your best tool.

Before making a big purchase, take a moment to research. Ask specific questions like:
❓ “Has this stone been enhanced?”
❓ “Was this irradiated or heat treated?”
The right questions often reveal the most honest answers.
Making Purchases: The Real Work Begins
Once shopping begins, the fun quickly turns into focused decision-making.
For every purchase, we consider mineral type, quality, price, sourcing, vendor minimums, resale value, and variety.

The decision fatigue is real, but so worth it.
We carefully track every purchase, noting:
💎 Vendor name & location
💎 Crystal name & origin
💎 Cost & quantity
💎 Payment method
💎 Ethical sourcing notes
This helps us with pricing, accounting, and transparency once we’re back home.
Invoices & Packing
Invoice mistakes happen...not because any of the vendors are trying to pull one over on you, but because they're tired too, and they're humans too, and they can make mistakes in the math.
As a time-saver, a lot of people will choose to leave their order with the vendor, let them total it all up, and then come back later to pay their invoice. If you do this, you just have to be prepared for the odd mistake here and there. We've had some very costly ones where people overcharged us. We've also had some where they undercharged us and I am always super honest about that and I call them to amend the invoice.

For packing:
📦 Ask vendors for boxes whenever possible
🛒 Grocery and hardware stores are great backup options
🧻 Toilet paper and paper towels are surprisingly excellent packing materials
If you’re flying with crystals: don’t pre-wrap them. TSA will unwrap everything (We learned this the hard way and almost missed our flight home!) Carry stones loose in a flat box and pack them at the gate.
Avoiding Buyer's Remorse
With endless options, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement. But our most important rule is simple:
Only buy what we love.

By choosing pieces we truly feel called to, we avoid buyer’s remorse and ensure that everything we bring home feels aligned, intentional, and special.
